Barbie rocks the cradle

Barbie Almabis (Contributed photo)In a lot of ways, former acoustic pop sensation Barbie Almalbis is stepping out of her comfort zone.
Barbie is releasing a new album entitled "Goodbye My Shadow" in a couple of weeks and the first single off the album is already available as a download via her official website. It's a bold move for a musician whose previous efforts involved the production facility and marketing might of a multinational recording company.
The creation of Barbie's latest album has also been attended by new adventures in living life and making music. For the past five years, she devoted much of her waking hours being wife to painter husband Martin Honasan and mom to daughter Noa Stina (now three years old) and son Liam Israel (10 months old).
Barbie still performed in occasional evening engagements in between pregnancies. She still composed new songs at night when the house was still and the kids were tucked in bed.
A year ago while pregnant with son Liam, she composed a couple of tunes on her laptop, which eventually shaped up into a batch of new materials for an album. She learned the ropes of making good music on her own, reading, writing and producing on an informal studio at home.
Barbie tells of her DIY escapade to Yahoo! OMG! Philippines: "It was a different experience. It was the first time I've recorded most of my parts at home. I use a laptop to compose. Sometimes, I'd put my guitar and place a few mics around the room. There's a soundproofed room in the house where I sometimes do my vocals.
"I started out with lots of trial and error. First time I did it, my guitar parts sounded terrible. I got a bit frustrated so I researched and researched (her emphasis) to come up with the right sound I was looking for."
Barbie subsequently convened her current back-up band, composed of brother-in-law Karel Honasan on bass and Alden Abaca on drums, to flesh out her working drafts into full-blown songs. She consciously aimed for her songs to sound as good in her makeshift home environment as they would be when they finally work on the tracks in the studio.
As luck would have it, her favorite producer Maly Andres (Violent Playground) slipped into town just as Barbie and band mates were about to record her new album. He moved to New Zealand after producing Barbie's Cradle's second album.
Early this year, Maly dropped a message on Facebook about staying in Manila for a few weeks and if by any chance, Barbie would be interested in making an album with him. Maly and Barbie eventually laid down a few tracks while Maly was in Manila, but work on the album progressed via regular email exchange.
All this time, her manager and partner in the indie label 16 Stones, Tommy Tanchangco, hardly heard a pipsqueak on Barbie's newest effort. She basked in the freedom to do whatever she wanted but at the same time, Barbie felt obliged to deliver her best as part of the bargain.
Tommy got the chance to finally listen to her new songs during the mixing of the tracks. Afterwards, the daring duo decided to use the Internet to promote and market Barbie's brand new music.
Barbie reasons, "With my last album, we did it the traditional way. This time around, it's like everybody's online now, it's where people listen to music. I listen to music online.
"At the same time, I know that iTunes is not yet set up in the Philippines, and not a lot of people have PayPal accounts so Internet purchasing is not yet established here."
"But as an artist, I want to get my music out there. That's why I wanna share it. Giving my single for free (.WAV format) or in return for a donation (.MP3), makes it easier for people to hear the new sound, the new me for that matter."
In a number of ways, "Goodbye My Shadow" bids farewell to the Barbie of old, and to preconceived ideas of who Barbie Almalbis is and the music she makes. Musically, her latest album heads off in different directions from track to track, setting off minor explosions in your head in the attempt to leave an imprint beyond the three-minute mark.
Weirdly titled "Ostrich Cowboy" is sound-tracked by REM-like folk rock sharing the same page as one-hit wonder Frente! who remade the original unrest of New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle" into a quiet croon. In fact, Barbie's child-woman singing mirrors that of Frente! lead singer Angie Hart's vocals.
Elsewhere, an undercurrent of funk pushes "No Police" out of the acoustic jam, and an itty bit of erotic tingle brightens its refrain. "Lights" has a nice light jazz feel while "Unraveling" works out the love blues in strummed guitars.
Barbie said she writes from her personal experiences. "Goodbye My Shadow" is strewn with passionate personal notes for a husband, Jesus Christ, an imagined future for her growing kids, and in one track, on the subtleties of desire.
Despite the album title, say Hello! instead to the resurgence of Barbie Almalbis. She has taken the road less traveled by, and she deserves all the best wishes for taking chance. She may as well be pushing the boundaries of Pinoy pop music to its next surge.

Toni Gonzaga is the screen name of Celestine Cruz Gonzaga, who is one of the most ravishing Filipina actresses and is also a pleasant and popular television host. Born on January 21, 1984, Toni is famous for playing the leading female host in Pinoy Big Brother. Her fame rose to greater heights as a female newscaster in a satirical news show called Wazzup Wazzup. But being multitalented is just a part of her personality and she used her singing talent to launch two music albums also.
BIO:
Name: Celestine Cruz Gonzaga
Nickname: Tintin
Screen name: Toni Gonzaga
Zodiac Sign: Aquarius
Birthdate: 20 January 1984

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL:
She got her first big break as a fan of Piolo Pascual in a softdrink commercial, at the age of 17 years old. She recalls that at that time, “Masaya ako at excited kasi ito yung first lead commercial ko tapos Piolo was there di ko nga ineexpect na nandun sya.” (I am happy and excited because this is my first lead commercial after Piolo was there and I did not expect that he was there.)[citation needed]
Toni later became one of the co-hosts of hit noontime variety show Eat Bulaga! (GMA-7) where she started her showbiz career. At about the same time, she joined Studio 23′s Wazzup Wazzup as one of the anchors and was tagged as the “News Diva” because she always seemed to deliver the news with such a powerful voice.[citation needed] (Studio 23 is a subsidiary of ABS-CBN, widely regarded in the Philippines as GMA-7′s competitor.) Toni Gonzaga as the News Diva.
After signing with ABS-CBN (and leaving GMA7), She encountered different accusations of being ENGRATA but she is not, They had meetings with GMA before she left and the said network welcomes Toni whenever she want to. Toni quickly became a part of such shows like the Most Requested Show (MRS) with Roderick Paulate and Amy Perez. Of which she says, “masaya katrabaho mga beteranong artista kasi aside sa magaling sila at enjoy kasama marami kang matutunan sa kanila.”[citation needed] She was also a part of Entertainment Konek (ETK) with Ogie Diaz, which she enjoys because of the fun environment. She also signed up as of the female co-hosts of the then-novel reality show, Pinoy Big Brother. “Natutuwa ako at nagpapasalamat kasi they (Management) considered me at they trusted me na maging part ng malaking show na ito,”[citation needed] she says. She shares that the offer to be a part of PBB came before their group went to perform in the US for the US Kapamilya Caravan. She took up AB Communication Arts at the University of Santo Tomas.
In 2006, she diversified into music and came out with her first music album called You Complete me. Released by Star records, this album is a romantic hit and included songs like We belong, love fool, Kung kayak o and Kapag Tumibok Ang Puso.
SIMPLE AND BEST
Toni grew up in a Christian family with a heart for the people. Even before she started her career in showbiz, Toni has always felt the need to reach out to other people. She was once a Sunday school teacher in her town. She also ran for Baranggay Kagawad in Taytay, a position she lobbied hard for, recalling how she went door to door when she first campaigned. Toni is now in her 3rd year as a Kagawad where she is in charge of the “Clean & Green” campaign of her baranggay. She says, “Inelect ka nila sa posisyon and they have their trust in you na magagawa mo ang trabaho at service mo sa kanila.” For Toni, she understands that her celebrity is just one aspect of her life and it shouldn’t stop her from doing a good job in the public service arena.
In spite of celebrity stereotypes, Toni enjoys the simple life. On her downtime, she likes to stay at home and to play with her 1 year old Golden Retriever named WuWu (named after her show, Wazzup Wazzup) “Minsan lumalabas kami to eat outside, watch movie, ganun masaya basta kasama mo family mo” she says. She enjoys going back to the basics so much that she says she would easily last in the Big Brother house for 100 days. “Di naman ako mahilig sa mga cellphone, ganun” she shares. Toni admits, though, that the she would miss being able to surf the internet if she were in the Big Brother house. She says that she loves to surf, and she regularly reads the forum posts about her, especially the ones with negative comments. She figures that reading albeit sometimes hurtful opinions help her grow as an artist.
Ever bent on self-improvement, Toni is currently taking AB English – a shift from her Mass Com course. She feels that her new course will help her become a better host. “May mga practicumer kami sa show na nakakausap ko then nakakakuha ako ng idea from them in broadcating” pertaining to the trainees in her shows.
TONI ENJOYS
With her numerous hosting jobs & growing career, Toni certainly feels blest. She says she especially enjoys working in Pinoy Big Brother because “masaya kasi at magaan ang ambiance at ang set.” When asked about her thoughts on the housemates, she easily says, “Na-meet ko sila personally kasi ako sumundo sa kanila kaya alam ko kung saan sila nakatira at ang atmosphere ng life nila kaya i have no doubts kung bakit sila ganun kumulos sa loob ng bahay, kasi totoong tao sila talaga.”
Aside from PBB, Toni enjoys working with people like Vhong Navarro, one of her co-hosts in Wazzup Wazzup. She’s thankful that she has also gotten to work with Ms. Nova Villa, and other co workers in her shows.
Aside from enjoying her work, Toni feels she is just your average 21 year old, who just happens to be on televisoin from time to time. In her 4 years in the business, Toni’s biggest learning in life has been to know whom to trust, and to always follow your parents. “Wala kang mapagkakatiwalaan maliban lang sa mga taong totoo sayo at sa pamilya mo sila yung nariyan para pagkuhanan mo ng lakas at inspirasyon,” she affirms. When asked where she sees herself after 5 years, she only smiles and says everything happens in God’s purpose and will.

Lady Gaga

WHY IS SHE FAMOUS

With her skyrocketing fame, outrageous outfits and controversial acts, Lady Gaga might just be the new Madonna. Her singles "Just Dance," "Poker Face," "Telephone," and "Alejandro" off of her debut album The Fame were all smash hits and seemed to revive the music-video industry. Now, with a just-released new single, "Born This Way," multiple awards and an outlandish entrance at the 2011 Grammys, Lady Gaga's celebrity is growing to infinite heights.

Lady Gaga Quote

"I always loved rock and pop and theater. When I discovered Queen and David Bowie is when it really came together for me, and I realized I could do all three."

81 SEX APPEAL

Unlike many pop stars (remember Britney's virginity shtick?), Lady Gaga often proclaims her fondness for sex, and her persona is built around her sexuality. Like Madonna in her prime, Lady Gaga is intent on pushing boundaries and has shocked audiences in the process. But her unique, outrageous style paired with a killer body makes for quite the pretty package. She's often photographed wearing eccentrically revealing clothing (remember the meat dress?) and has been known to forgo pants altogether. We think we could get behind that trend.

85 SUCCESS

We're pretty sure Lady Gaga will continue to record more hit tunes, rack in some more awards at the Grammys, start appearing in the lad mags, and solidify her reputation as a dance music queen. Although her songs are all over the radio and her face is all over the internet, her upcoming second album will prove for sure that she's got staying power.

LADY GAGA BIOGRAPHY

Lady Gaga
Stefani Germanotta (later known as Lady Gaga) was born March 28, 1986, in New York City to an Italian-American family. She attended Convent of the Sacred Heart school and, as a little girl, she remembers singing into a plastic tape recorder to the likes ofCyndi Lauper and Michael Jackson. By age 4, Lady Gaga had taught herself to play the piano, and when she was a teenager, she penned her first song. When she was just 14, she was playing open mike nights at New York’s Bitter End, and by the age of 17, she had been accepted into the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU.

Lady Gaga started working the local Lower East Side club scene, performing then-hits like "Beautiful Dirty Rich" while donning her unique stage outfits. When she was 20, she started working for Interscope Records and was busy writing songs for other musical groups such as The Pussycat Dolls.

In August 2007, Lady Gaga performed at Lollapalooza.

Lady Gaga Releases The Fame With The Hit "Just Dance"

In 2008, Lady Gaga released her debut album The Fame, which included the hit tracks "Just Dance," "Boys, Boys, Boys," "Poker Face," and "Alejandro." She sang at the Winter Music Conference in March 2008. In July, she performed on the reality show So You Think You Can Dance as well as at the Miss Universe 2008 pageant. Then, that September, she made a guest appearance on MTV's The Hills, costarring Lauren Conrad, Heidi Montag,Whitney Port, and Audrina Patridge.

In mid-2008, soon after she began getting major exposure, Lady Gaga dyed her naturally brown hair platinum blond. Apparently she was being confused with fellow rebel songstress Amy Winehouse.

Lady Gaga Collaborates With Beyonce

In 2010, Lady Gaga released "Telephone," a collaboration with Beyonce that became a smash hit. For the song, the two singers filmed a high-concept, high-budget music video that, at nine minutes long, put them on par with with pop culture icons like Michael Jackson and Madonna.

Lady Gaga Wins A Grammy In 2010

Lady Gaga garnered multiple awards for her hit single, earned a nomination for Album of the Year and won Best Electronic/Dance Album at the 2010 Grammys. Her song "Poker Face" was also nominated for Song of the Year.

Lady Gaga At The 2011 Grammys

At the 2011 Grammys, Lady Gaga won awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Bad Romance;" Best Pop Vocal Album for Fame Monster and Best Video for "Bad Romance." But more than for her awards, Lady Gaga made a splash with her entrance -- she was carried in by models in a giant egg. If you thought she couldn't outdo the meat dress from last year, well, she did.
And with the release of "Born This Way," the first single from her upcoming album, Lady Gaga is steady on her rise to the highest echelons of pop stardom, determined to surprise us every step of the way.
